We are sad to report that William Johnson passed away on December 10, 2011. William Johnson was the founder of Minnesota, USA-based Audio Research Corporation (ARC), one of the hallmarks of the American hi-fi industry, well known for their championing of tube-based electronic designs that continues today. Audio Research was acquired by the Italian firm Quadrivio SGR in 2008 and Mr. Johnson was given the title of Chairman Emeritus at that time.
The SoundStage! Network toured Audio Research’s facility in October 2001, which is when the photo shown right was taken, and we had a chance to talk to Mr. Johnson about the start-up of ARC and his philosophies on product design. Without question, William Johnson was passionate about his work and his vision helped to establish ARC as a premier hi-fi brand, one that has endured for decades. William Johnson was a legend in hi-fi circles who had tremendous integrity and foresight, creating one of the most respected audio companies in the world, an accomplishment that will allow his great name to live on.
